DEUTSCHE VERSION HIER!

opening reception
Friday 08.07.2011 at 8.00 pm

closing party Saturday 06.08.2011 at 2.00 pm

For the visual and performing art exhibit, PERMACULTURE, the curators have chosen international street or otherwise urban artists whose work is concerned with issues of sustainability in their own practice and of our world. The exhibit will include reclaimed and upcycled materials, documentation of eco-conscious projects that were executed on city streets for an unsuspecting viewership, and time-based projects that will unfold during the month. The goal of this exhibit is to provide a forum for discussion about the state of the environment and to provoke ideas about re-purposing for sustainable art.

In addition to viewing the video screenings, two-dimensional and installation work featured in the gallery, the public will be invited to participate in weekly workshops led by artists that use re-purposed materials to create art objects.

emess

is not a street artist of superlatives and world records. Rather it’s his works that impresses through their remarkable formal bandwidth and transformability. EMESS experiences himself as an urban sculptor and printer using a multitude of expressions to transpose his interventions into the public space. The range of this artist from Berlin spans poster walls to stencils to meter-high installations—EMESS chooses medium, location and time of his interventions based on their intended message. His works are not simply nice street decorations; EMESS’ works are customized for their destination, often unpleasant, needling and thought-provoking.

With his current project City Music, EMESS presents a new type of urban intervention that deals with the concept of the acoustics of public spaces. Wind-powered sound installations were placed in various locations in Berlin and Stockholm and documented on video. Independent of any other power source these installations rely on the wind and the aerodynamics of the urban locations to supply the appropriate soundtrack. A small bird house provides camouflage and protection from the elements. The exhibition shows original artwork as well and the two video documentaries “City Music Berlin” and “City Music Stockholm”.

Erik Otto

In addition to painting, San Francisco-based artist ERIK OTTO has designed and constructed large-scale installations, theater sets, retail storefronts, and independent film sets. Otto recently completed the acclaimed Artist-in-Residence program at Recology San Francisco and is committed to working with reclaimed paint and materials to produce work that is both expressive and conceptual. He will screen a time-lapse video of an outdoor installation being built, taken apart, and being rebuilt again in multiple settings alongside two-dimensional works.

„Through my artwork and installations, I am visually narrating a beautiful dream battled by an undercurrent of destruction. My goal is to take the viewer to a place where chaos meets peace and loose meets refinement while depicting the struggle to connect the awakened state to the desires found within. Pulling from a repeating theme of symbolic imagery, the intent of my work is to create an honest reminder to pursue a life of significance and live out our dreams.“

Mosstika

is a Hungarian street artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York, well-known for her moss grafitti and living installations. She will include a floor installation using soil, salt, and traditional Hungarian folk patterns that seem to explore our relationship to the earth, our roots, and travel patterns.

NEOZOON

is the name of an art group which has been known for their actions performed in public space. The founding concept of their work is the relationship between animal and human in their own habitat: a western urban living space. Second-hand and discarded animal skins both supply NEOZOON with their source material and represent the basis of their research.
This waste product is re-evaluated by going through a treatment process and by then being subsequently put back out on the street.

In Spring 2010 the artists´group installed mechanically moving furcoats at the Münster Zoo. In Germany, disrupting the seeing habits of the visitors. The film allows viewers to look into the coat-animals´ inclosure and at the same time documents the reactions of the zoo visitors in front of the cage. On a typical zoo-plate the visitor gets more detailed informations about the new species.

SpY

is an artist from Madrid whose first endeavors date back to the mid-eighties. Shortly after, already a national reference as a graffiti artist, he started to explore other forms of artistic communication in the street. His work involves the appropiation urban elements through transformation or replication, commentary on urban reality, and the interference in its communicative codes.

The bulk of his production stems from the observation of the city and an appreciation of its components, not as inert elements but as a palette of materials overflowing with possibilities. His ludic spirit, careful attention to the context of each piece, and a not invasive, constructive attitude, unmistakably characterize his interventions.

SpY's pieces want to be a parenthesis in the automated inertia of the urban dweller. They are pinches of intention, hidden in a corner for whoever wants to let himself be surprised. Filled with equal parts of irony and positive humor, they appear to raise a smile, incite reflection, and to favor an enlightened conscience.

Zonenkinder Collective

The Hamburg-based artists are inspired in their creations by their surroundings and atmosphere which transforms them into visions with attention to form, colour and detail. The transformation and spontaneous recombination of the existing elements in the situational context has a specific radiance—either urban scene or nature become stages of
artistic expression. The normal perceptions of the observer are disrupted, allowing for a shift in perspective to reveal the seemingly normal: “We love to find places, whether in the city or in nature and to alter them through spontaneous creative interventions, to reinterpret them, thus creating a new story and invoke unusual associations within the
observer.”

For its art the Collective uses a multitude of objects, discards, rejects, pick-ups, seemingly innocuous everyday objects as well as bizarre tree constellations which they integrate into murals, installations and paintings. Devoid of their original purpose these object merge into a collage with a new context of meaning, placed in a stage-like fashion they evolve into participants of a drama of freaks, creatures, the known and unknown.
