20th Pictoplasma Berlin Festival

Diesen Mai feiert das Pictoplasma Festival 20 Jahre Begeisterung für Charaktere! Einmal mehr wird das Festival zum internationalen Epizentrum für Künstler*innen, Illustrator*innen, Filmemacher*innen und Designer*innen. Die Jubiläumsausgabe wirft ein Schlaglicht auf die Character Archives und blickt zurück auf die Anfänge des Projekts als Online-Verzeichnis im Jahr 2000 – die zu den Bestseller-Sammelbänden und dem fortlaufenden Festival führten – und refektiert über die Praxis des Sammelns, Kuratierens und Förderns von zeitgenössischem Character Design und Kunst.

Vier Gruppenausstellungen an verschiedenen Spielorten zeigen Arbeiten der diesjährigen Festival-Künstler*innen. Im neurotitan liegt der Fokus auf Illustration, Storytelling und Graphic Arts. Hier installiert Joseph Melhuish (UK) eine große Wand mit Fake Straßenplakaten, die Underground-Parties bewerben – teilweise in VR entworfen, atmen seine Entwürfe den digitalen Zeitgeist.

Genie Espinosa (ES) bringt großformatige Cut Outs und ein überdimensioniertes Infatable nach Berlin, selbstbewusste weibliche Charaktere im für sie typisch farbkräftigen Stil. Und Eric Schwarz (DE/FR) stellt eine Reihe seiner graphischen Siebdrucke aus – die Druckplatten sind dabei aus LEGO Steinen hergestellt.
Josephine Rais (DE) installiert ihre fröhlichen Figuren in einer Vielzahl von Medien, während die Ästhetik von Kawaii und Cuteness in den handgeschnitzten Holzskulpturen des thailändischen Künstlers Parn Aniwat (THA) und den ausdrucksstarken Gemälden von Mila Useche (COL) ein neues Niveau erreichen.

Pictoplasma, the world's leading conference of contemporary character design in illustration, animation, graphic and urban arts, celebrates its 20th anniversary. Over the past two decades the Berlin-based project has promoted a uniquely playful and interdisciplinary investigation of new visual worlds in the digital age, served as a lively forum for a growing international community, and redefned the boundaries of contemporary character representation.

To pay tribute to our coming of age, this May 1—5, Pictoplasma awaits all international character creators and connoisseurs for a specially immersive programme of awe-inducing artist presentations and back-to back conference lectures, freshly hatched animations illuminating the big screen, numerous hands-on workshops, endless fun, inspiration and loads of visual confetti …

Four group exhibitions at different venues show works by this year's festival artists. At neurotitan the spotlight is on illustration, storytelling and graphic arts. Joseph Melhuish (UK) presents a billboard with fake posters advertising underground parties; partially created in VR, it brims with the digital look of the hour. This rubs shoulders with the oversized cut outs and large infatable, sassy female characters of Genie Espinosa (ES) and an array of graphical silk screen prints made with pixilated pressure plates by Eric Schwarz (DE/FR). Josephine Rais (DE) installs her cheerful characters in a variety of media, while cute and kawaii reach new levels in the hand-chiselled wooden sculptures of Parn Aniwat (THA) and the expressive paintings of Mila Useche (COL).
