Brailles
The series, Brailles (1997-2004) was inspired in part by the Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges, who was almost completely blinded by an illness at the age of 55. Ferrari selected nude photographs and embossed them with braille text of excerpts from the works of Borges and other authors. The verses can only be read by touching the images, "caressing" the women's bodies, as Ferrari put it.The technique of collage and montage, a constant of Ferrari's oeuvre, here finds its first tactile application.
He also applied the approach to masterpieces of Western art history containing Christian iconography or erotic images, imprinting them, for example, with Bible verses. Through this practice, Ferrari generated pictorial interpretations that expressed his criticism of the Catholic Church, while simultaneously allowing his works to evade censorship.
